Fungi play a critical role in our everyday lives, yet most people live without hardly ever noticing their existence! Founded in 2013 by fungal enthusiast Mara Fae Penfil, Female and Fungi is an educational and experimental platform from which to explore this mysterious world of decomposing and recomposing life.
Through mycological education and community organizing, Female and Fungi explores how lessons from the fungi can teach us to strengthen our local and global communities by connecting deeply with nature and working towards a holistic and healthy future.
Within our efforts in mycology and beyond, we work to address social justice issues, especially in relation to gender and sexual injustices. We recognize the need to identify the patterns and intersections between these and other interlacing issues such as racial, cultural, economic, and environmental struggles. It is our mission to create safe spaces during our workshops and events where we can come together and share our voices, creating a resilient mycelial network of support and exchange within the global mycological community.
We are lucky to be witnessing the blossoming (or should we say mushrooming?) interest in mycology that is taking place across the US and the world. People are hungry for knowledge and experience and it is our goal to help provide space for people to explore and grow with the fungi.
About Mara Fae Penfil
